Dr. Stephen Michaels

Opening Session – HSMP Updates

Stephen T. Michaels, M.D.,  is the chief operating and medical officer for MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital with direct oversight of the hospital’s day-to-day operations, as well as providing medical direction to ensure delivery of the highest quality healthcare services. Dr. Michaels currently serves as the Co-Chair of the Healthy St. Mary’s Partnership. During this presentation, Dr. Michaels will provide an overview of HSMP and an update on the achievements and work of the action teams over the past year.
William Tilburg

Keynote Session – Medical Cannabis in Maryland

William Tilburg, JD, MPH, serves as the Director of Policy and Government Relations at the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission (MMCC). In this role, Will leads MMCC’s legislative and regulatory efforts, and assists the Commission in developing and implementing a safe and effective medical cannabis program in Maryland. This presentation will introduce and outline the medical cannabis program in Maryland. Topics will include: how the program works, what is legal and illegal under current law, and common public health and safety issues or concerns.
Genevieve Martinez-Garcia

Breakout Session – Can an App Sexually Empower Youth?

Genevieve Martinez-Garcia, Ph.D., is the Director of Innovation and Research at Healthy Teen Network. Genevieve is a health educator committed to bringing innovation to the field of sexual and reproductive health. This presentation will evaluate the results of Crush—a robust mobile health application with the intent to reduce pregnancy among adolescent women. Crush is a self-contained app designed to support healthy sexual behavior. It is grounded in behavior change theory, uses technology to enhance education, and offers tools linking users to care in their own community.

Jane LawingBreakout Session – Harm Reduction and the Opioid Crisis

Jane Lawing, MA, MS, RN-BC, is the Program Director of Health Services at St. Mary’s County Health Department (SMCHD). One of the programs she oversees is the Harm Reduction Program. Jane has been a registered nurse for just under ten years. She has a diverse nursing background, working in urban Washington, DC area hospitals as well as rural areas in Upstate New York and Southern Maryland.

Ashly NelsonAshly Nelson, BS, NCPT, is the Program Administrator for the Harm Reduction program at SMCHD. Ashly served 6 years in the United States Navy as a Hospital Corpsman. Since that time, she has taken on roles working with Pathways to Housing, DC as a veterans outreach specialist and then as a mental health case manager with the St. Mary’s County Detention Center.
Ashly and Jane will provide information and discuss the launch of a Harm Reduction Program in St. Mary’s County.

Shawn McintoshBreakout Session – Maryland Sugar Rush

Shawn McIntosh, is the Executive Director at Sugar Free Kids Maryland. Shawn has more than 22 years of experience in the non-profit community, focusing on poverty issues, community development and health disparities. Research shows that consumption of soda and other sugary drinks put children at greater risk of developing chronic diseases such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes and tooth decay. Shawn will present a short slideshow about the Sugar Free Kids project, followed by a panel discussion on the importance of these issues for St. Mary’s County residents and all Marylanders. The panel includes Dr. Arethusa Kirk of United HealthCare, Lori Irvin of the American Heart Association, Chad Leo of the Maryland Association of Student Councils, and Dr. Beena Khetpal of MedStar Health.

Plenary Session – Using Social Media & Communications to Engage Youth

Starla Stiles, MA, is the Director of Communications at Truth Initiative.  Starla is a public relations executive with over 15 years of experience in social marketing, public affairs and crisis communications for Fortune 500 companies, government and non-profit organizations.  This session will provide details on how the truth® campaign developed an integrated communications strategy that has catalyzed a movement through building coalitions, creatively pushing an “evergreen” message, and adapting to dramatic changes in the communications landscape.

Is the conference schedule available?
The 2018 conference schedule will be posted to this web page as soon as it becomes available.

Will Continuing Education Units (CEUs) be provided?
Yes, our partners at the Department of Social Services will be coordinating CEUs for interested attendees. Attendees that met the requirements will receive their CEUs by mail. Please contact the St. Mary’s County Department of Social Services with any questions regarding the status of your CEUs.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?
No, printed tickets are not required but all attendees are asked to register so that we can be prepared with enough seating, handouts and refreshments.
