Walktober & Walk Maryland Day

October in Maryland becomes WALKTOBER, a month where the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) and its partners promote and host events spotlighting pedestrians’ safety, health, and commuting options in current walk programs and initiatives.

Marylanders across the state are also preparing for this year’s celebration of Walk Maryland Day on October 4, 2023. Walk Maryland Day is a celebration of our state’s official exercise and a call to action to support safe walking and walkability. Register as a Walk Leader or Sole Mate!

On October 3, 2023, the St. Mary’s County Commissioners issued a Proclamation for WALKTOBER and Walk Maryland Day!

Community Walking Maps in St. Mary’s County

According to the Maryland the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, only 33% of adults in St. Mary’s County are currently at a healthy weight. The Healthy Eating and Active Living (HEAL) action team wants to empower our community members to live a healthier lifestyle in whatever way works for them. For some individuals this may mean attending fitness classes or trying a new physical activity. For others, this can be as simple as an evening stroll around the neighborhood.

The following community walking maps for St. Mary’s County were developed by our partners at the Department of Land Use and Growth Management. Residents are encouraged to use them, share them and provide feedback!
